Afternoon Adventures

Josiah ambled up the sidewalk after school, pulling his backpack behind him. Opening the closet door, he set his back pack down and walked off. Knowing Josiah would be heading to the kitchen to sit and wait for his afternoon snack, I took a moment to unzip his backpack and remove his binder. In that instance, Josiah veered off course.

Before I even realized what was happening, he hurled the flat screen TV to the ground. It landed with a thud.  Josiah gleefully began tossing it around on the floor. Without reacting, I scooped him up and marched that boy to his room.  I guided him up onto his bed and left.  Josiah has been throwing the TV to the ground for a couple of days. I figured with enough consistency he would eventually get the message that TV throwing equals time out.

Late Night Fun

Josiah loves milk. Last night we realized just how much. Way past Josiah’s bedtime, I heard a loud banging sound in the kitchen. Assuming Josiah was yanking the oven door open and slamming it closed,  as he lately enjoys doing, I raced to the kitchen to redirect him back to bed.

It wasn’t the oven door. Josiah had yanked a gallon of milk from the refrigerator and threw it to the ground. The lid popped off. I found Josiah crouching on the floor, staring intently as a stream of milk flowed from the jug, creating a massive, white puddle all around him. He was fascinated.

He Wins

Winner[2]Over the years Josiah has done a great job of decluttering our home. We have very little ‘stuff” lying around. If you look closely, you’ll notice, no end tables, no lamps, very few decorations of any kind. Those things used to be magnets, attracting Josiah’s attention.  He felt it necessary to see how far he could throw them.

That boy LOVES to knock things over. He repeatedly throws his kitchen chair to the ground. Often,  he scans counter tops for things to throw. Occasionally, at school, he overturns chairs and tables. When he was too little to reach the fireplace mantle, Josiah would hurl a sock or a shirt in that general direction, attempting to knock over figurines.

Maid for Cleaning

cleaningI’ve never been one to enjoy cleaning.  I don’t know many people who do, actually. Well, there is my mom.  She loves to clean.  And, Victoria and Maria, 2 cleaning ladies we had at various times when with just 2 kids we thought life was too busy to keep the house clean ourselves. Those sweet ladies were the happiest women I have ever met.  They were always smiling.  They had such joy.  Maria hummed constantly, all the while cleaning up after others.

But that’s it.  Those are the only 3 I know of.  I don’t like to clean, but I love to organize.  Give me a room full of clutter and chaos, a few trash bags and a marker and I’m in my glory.  There is nothing like sorting and categorizing and simplifying. Lately however, I’ve noticed Josiah has been helping me. Without realizing it, that boy has been encouraging me to clean.

The Great Outdoors

I’m not sure when or even why we decided camping would be a great idea for our family. We camped often as I was growing up.  I have fond memories of early morning breakfasts at the campsite; of playing in the great outdoors with my siblings.  There is nothing like camping, when you are a kid.

It’s a whole different story when you are the adult who has to prepare everything for the camping experience. Think about it.  Basically, you are planning, purchasing and packing everything you will need for everyone in your family to live in, sleep in, eat, wear and enjoy for as many days as you will be gone.
