Bouncing Back

plateJosiah is beginning to feel better. He just broke a plate. Earlier today he stood precariously close to the metal trash can in the kitchen. A small grin spread across his face. I was able to whisk it off to a safe hiding place in the laundry room before he could touch it.

My reflexes are getting better. Often times, I am able to catch objects in mid air before they crash to the ground. Not so just now. Chandler and I were enjoying a snack at the kitchen table. Josiah sat next to me in his chair. I gave him his iPad to see what he wanted to eat. He touched the icon that said, ‘I am Josiah’. I smiled. He reminds me of that often.

Looking for Joy

My favorite author, Andy Andrews says we are all either in a crisis, coming out of a crisis or heading into a crisis.

Think about it. Think about your own life or the lives of all the people closest to you. It’s true isn’t it?  Knowing it doesn’t change it. But knowledge is power. Knowing your life will be in an almost perpetual state of crisis gives you some options. Deal with it. Complain about it. Ignore it. Enjoy it.

I’m sure you can think of other options. These are the first to come to mind.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know

just-wonderingFor some reason, people often think Rick and I have a special communication connection with Josiah.  Josiah is non verbal. So, naturally, people ask questions about him when they need to gather information. Some questions are logical. We definitely have the answers. Others, not so much.

Monday afternoon I spoke with a nurse on the phone. I explained Josiah’s behavior. I told her he was non verbal. I told her he was sleeping most of the day, but woke 2 separate times and cried hard. He cried for close to an hour both times. He hit himself in the head a few times. He moaned a lot.

Going Home

dischargedJosiah is going home. A team of Drs. came in this morning and gave us the thumbs up. Blood work shows a strain of something that has too many letters and syllables in it for me to pronounce. Basically, he will need antibiotics for a couple of weeks. We can certainly take care of that at home.

This morning at 5 am, a couple of nurses came in Josiah’s dark room. He and I were sound asleep. Since last night they had been keeping a close eye on the IV site. It was red and a tad been swollen. They were able to get his vital signs without disturbing him. But since his arm still looked red, the IV needed to be removed.

A Mother Knows

I guess after 10 years it makes sense I would know what to expect. I fully anticipated Josiah would get sick. I thought it would take 24 hours. It actually took closer to 36. Josiah woke up sick, Sunday Morning. He spent the entire day doing what he does best when he’s sick. He slept.

A few times he woke up wanting a drink. We gave him only small sips. A few hours later, he’d wake up and bring that small sip right back out. When he is sick, Josiah shuts down. He sleeps non-stop for hours. He sleeps non-stop for days actually. He’s done this since he’s been an infant.
